Special-needs schools & LA GATOR funding in Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge has schools built for students with dyslexia, autism and other learning differences, and LA GATOR's highest award, up to $15,253, is for students with a disability under IDEA.

Where these numbers come from. Approval status, grades and enrollment are from the Louisiana Department of Education, 2025-2026 BESE-Approved Nonpublic Schools Academic Classification List & Brumfield v. Dodd Approvals (May 19, 2025). Tuition Donation Credit participation is from the Louisiana Department of Education, Tuition Donation Credit Program 2024-2025 Participating Nonpublic Schools. Staffing, affiliation and addresses are from the U.S. Department of Education, NCES Private School Survey (2023-24 public-use file; 2021-22 where a school did not respond in 2023-24). Tuition is not reported to the state, so confirm it with the school.

* K-12 enrollment on the state's 2025-26 BESE approval list; federal survey enrollment for schools not on that list. "BESE-approved" means the school can accept LA GATOR tuition if it registers in Odyssey for the year. "Not approved" schools can't be paid tuition from the account.

The IDEA amount

Students with a disability under IDEA receive the highest LA GATOR award, up to $15,253 for 2026-27. The award is tiered by the level of need and is higher for households at or below 250% of the poverty level. Students with an IDEA disability are also in the second priority group when funding is short, right after current participants.

Therapies and evaluations

Beyond tuition, the account can pay licensed providers for speech, occupational, physical and behavioral therapy and audiology. A family can combine a school placement with outside therapy, or build a home-based plan around therapies and tutoring.

One program you can't combine

Louisiana's separate School Choice Program for Certain Students with Exceptionalities can't be used at the same time as LA GATOR. If your child already has that scholarship, compare the two amounts before switching.

Questions for any school

  1. Which diagnoses and support levels do you serve, and do you have openings for my child's grade?
  2. Are therapies included in tuition or billed separately, and can they be paid through Odyssey?
  3. How do you report progress, and which assessment do you give?
