For Baton Rouge schools, churches & ministries
Baton Rouge has a dense network of churches, and many already run a weekday preschool or Mother's Day Out. With nearly 17,000 eligible LA GATOR applications statewide for 2026-27 and few new seats, a BESE-approved K-6 school or a marketplace learning program at a church fills a real need. Several approved schools in the area enroll fewer than 150 students, so a small start can work.

Start a school or learning program
27 of the 72 approved schools in our area report fewer than 150 K-12 students. A church-hosted K-6 school, or a marketplace learning program for home-based families, is a realistic start.
An online Christian core
An online classical Christian K-12 curriculum can be the academic core of a church learning community. How it works →

Getting a new school into LA GATOR
- Choose the model: full-time school, hybrid, or a marketplace learning program.
- Apply to BESE for nonpublic school approval (applications are annual, through LDOE's EdLink) and meet Brumfield v. Dodd requirements.
- Register in the Odyssey platform and accept the program attestations: approved-use-only funds, safety, required assessments and financial transparency.
- Not ready for BESE approval? Apply as an LA GATOR service provider to sell courses or services.
- Price tuition against the $5,243-$7,626 awards so families can see what's left.
